Bible
Like our colleagues in other Christian and classical schools, we at Cornerstone make a conscious effort to integrate scripture into every class we teach. To do that, we teach our teachers to use resources such as Ruth Haycock’s The Encyclopedia of Bible Truths for School Subjects, as well as the works of Marty McCollough and the PEERS Test from the Nehemiah Institute.
However, Bible is an important enough source of revelation in the Christian life, that it also merits its own place in the timetable. When we study the Bible in class, we focus not just on the facts and characters, but the broad themes of scripture, such as creation, fall, and redemption.
In school year 2003-2004 we had a special emphasis on the Bible when we had as our chapel theme for the year: Sola Scriptura (scripture alone). We followed the next year, 2004-2005, with the theme of “We Are His People, His Sheep,” the next year. One of the twelve “Sheep Lessons” we learned that year was “Sheep finish eating before they digest any of their food.” This refers to memorizing (eating) and meditating (digesting) scripture in large chunks for later use.
Inspired by this concept, we set aside six long term passages of scripture to be used by each succeeding Cornerstone class as a focal memory passage for that year. By the time a Cornerstone student finishes sixth grade here, (s)he will know all of these passages:
